As spring showers show little sign of shifting, Stockholm born Stutterheim proves to be the new powerhouse of stylish weather-wear. With an ambition to create the only raincoat you’ll ever need through unrivaled quality and immaculate design, the strong collection of minimal raincoats, sturdy umbrellas and rain essentials are a refreshing revival of classic design and functionality, with a welcomed Swedish twist.
Envisioned as homage to his Granddad, a fisherman and theatre owner in Stockholm, Alexander Stutterheim has truly built a landmark brand whilst on his mission to rediscover the raincoat and restore its grandeur. From fully rubberized ponchos to socks made from army supplies, Stutterheim offers the very best in quality rain protection whilst keeping spring effortlessly stylish.
Alexander himself brings us up to speed on all things Stutterheim:
At Stutterheim the products truly speak for themselves, but the story behind the brand is distinctly defining. We bet you’ve had to tell it a thousand times, but if you will…
"My grandfather used to live in the archipelago of Stockholm and always used to go out fishing in his big black raincoat in the worst of weathers; I was always afraid he wouldn't make it back. Some years ago he passed away and I was going through his stuff and found his coat in the barn. I put it on and all the memories from him hit me and I decided to buy a coat just like his when I got back to Stockholm since all I had was a broken umbrella! I looked for the coat everywhere but all I could find was made in goretex material and made me look like a golfer lost in town. Then I decided to update my granddads coat as homage to him (and also I needed anti depressant winter hobby project). When the first coats arrived my friends wanted to buy them and I started to produce more of them. From there it has grown, slowly but steadily."
With a pretty precise product portfolio, we think each item stands strong as individually distinguished. We realize it’s early days for Stutterheim, but what items would you like to add to the collection next?
"I am set to launch a handmade and stormproof umbrella in a month’s time. It is made in the last remaining umbrella factory in Europe (I believe) in the north of Sweden and I think this will be something extra. I have many other ideas and samples of items to handle bad weather in style. I will also launch my very exclusive “Arvid” Coat, which I hope will give Mackintosh and Burberry a run for their money! One can follow the project at my Facebook Page and also help me out with ideas and participate in competitions etc. It´s like an open diary where everyone is invited to comment."
Finally, we’d love to know of any plans to bring your craftsmanship over to the UK. Could we expect to see Stutterheim stocked here anytime soon?
"Yes! I am discussing with several retailers but I need to have good ones who understand the brand and my ambition and also are likeable. I met Peggs and Son (in Brighton) and loved them so they will be the first retailer in the UK in some weeks. Also I would like to open a rain store in London but it is a question of money, I just can't do everything at once!"
